Irish Whiskey Magazine - Tastings - Hyde 1916

Hyde 1916

A single grain whiskey from independent bottlers Hibernia Distillers.
Matured for over 6 years in flame charred, first fill, ex-bourbon casks from
Kentucky in the USA. Bottled at 46% ABV with an RRP of €47.99.

Greg Dillon Notes

Nose:

Fresh, maybe even smoky – no, more like the smell of the smoke from when a match is extinguished followed
by vanilla notes, hints of strawberries and cream, with subtle hints of toasted oak. Lovely.

Palate:

Soft, buttery, creamy with a flavoursome spicy wrap. The
raft of flavours from the nose follow through and develop to a slightly more intense experience. Great stuff.

Finish:

Smooth, short, efficient; does just enough to tell you to get that cork out of the bottle and pour another wee
one, or two.

Overall:

A superb single grain, so much flavour, clearly a sign
of great casks and some blending wizardry here; thoroughly enjoyed this whiskey, and am impressed that the young single grain character can deliver such a wonderful bottle of whiskey.

Michael Foggarty Notes

Nose:

Quite light but with hints of toffee and vanilla.

Palate:

Very sweet, lots of butterscotch, slightly sticky, very
much reminds me of all the Scottish tablet I used to eat as a youngster.

Finish:

Dry, but the sweetness hangs around for a second or two.

Overall:

It’s a nice whiskey, but it doesn’t deliver in its price point.
