Irish Whiskey Magazine - Tastings - Prizefight

Prizefight

A whiskey brand based on telling the incredible stories of the Irish who came to America and became the greatest fighters of their day. A blend distilled by West Cork Distillers and unusually finished in American rye barrels. Bottled at 43% A.B.V. RRP of €49.99.

Greg Dillon Notes

Nose:

Sweet apples, orchard fruits, subtle oakiness, peaches, cream.

Palate:

Light, fresh, soft vanilla notes with a bunch of fruits and a
wave of freshly cut ginger going on. Interesting, if a little soft for a rye cask finished whiskey.

Finish:

Soft, spicy, didn’t hang around. Nice.

Overall:

Expected more from a whiskey with rye influence in
truth, but the fruity complexion was really interesting,
and the light spices definitely make this a thoroughly enjoyable whiskey to sip, especially if you are looking to explore new flavours and are not after something too polarising.

Michael Foggarty Notes

Nose:

Fresh mint, freshly grated ginger and some citrus notes.

Palate:

That spicy ginger from the rye maturation is dancing all over my taste buds, a bit like Yankee Sullivan in the ring. A fresh prickly spice and more lemon notes complement this.

Finish:

Short but spicy.

Overall:

It’s great to see these guys trying something different with the added rye cask maturation which has added a layer of complexity to what might have been an average whiskey. Punching above its weight (pun intended).
