Irish Whiskey Magazine - Tastings - Green Spot Chateau Montelena

Green Spot Chateau Montelena

This new release takes the standard Green Spot Single Pot Still and is then finished for 12 months in Zinfandel wine casks, from Chateau Montelena
in Napa Valley, California. Bottled at 46% ABV and selling for a RRP of €70.

Greg Dillon Notes

Nose:

Thick, treacle-like character, did not see that coming, like a creme brûlée in a glass, or maybe those old school
Caramac chocolate bars I recall from my childhood made of alternating caramel and wafer layers, covered in milk chocolate. There is a ripe fruitiness here too, pears specifically

Palate:

Spicy, creamy, sweet and interesting – there is a hell of a lot going on in this whiskey and wow is it interesting. Slight wine-like juicy notes, a grape note on the back palate all add to how much depth there is in this whisky. The exotic spices are fantastic.

Finish:

Quite short, a very dry finish with a stronger sherry character coming through.

Overall:

The nose was outstanding, really great, and the palate/finish delivered a lot of flavour, and this is
definitely a whiskey to buy and have in the house, but I could have spent hours with the nose.

Michael Foggarty Notes

Nose:

Fresh zesty lemon, elegant apples
and pear much like it sibling.

Palate:

Prickly heat almost like a fizzy drink as it glides across the palate. Very citrusy with some light raspberry tones. The classic pots still element arrives at the end.

Finish:

Lingering spicy pot still.

Overall:

Sometimes you shouldn’t write tasting notes for whiskeys, it’s almost better to just sit back and crack open the bottle and enjoy in one’s own company. This is a whiskey for that moment, no sharing, it’s all mine.
