Irish Whiskey Magazine - Tastings - Writers Tears Cask Strength 2017

Writers Tears Cask Strength 2017

An annual release from Walsh Distillery since 2011, this 2017 release gets a packaging facelift. A cask strength vatting of Single Pot Still and Single
Malt, limited to only 5,280 bottles, each individually signed and numbered.
Bottled at ABV of 53% and a RRP of €125.

Greg Dillon Notes

Nose:

Thick, fruity, syrupy nose with a great fresh oak influence, would hazard this whiskey has been kept maturing in virgin oak casks giving it a lovely vanilla ice cream note too. Indulgent.

Palate:

A lot softer than a typical cask strength whiskey would be at this ABV, lots of apples and lime citrus notes, that vanilla note from the nose develops to be more like fresh vanilla pods, buttery almost. There are peach and spicy fresh ginger notes too.

Finish:

Medium length, spicy, that ginger note lingers along with the peachy buttery note ever-present.

Overall:

There is a lot going on in this whiskey, a real treat of a drop. Lots going on, and thoroughly enjoyable both at natural cask strength, and with a few drops of water.

Michael Foggarty Notes

Nose:

Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate. An explosion in Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Augustus Gloop would dive in.

Palate:

More chocolate, some dark fruits, raisin, sultanas and a good lashing of nuttiness. Veruca Salt would approve.

Finish:

The end game. The Chocolate fruit and nut bar slowly disappear, bye bye Mike Teavee. Some pot still spice lingers on, hopefully the top half of the blend.

Overall:

It’s Charlies Bucket’s golden ticket and like one, it is very
limited and hard to come by. If you find one
grab it with both hands.
