First Pot Still release from Clonakilty Distillery


It’s been a long wait but it’s now here.

Clonakilty Distillery, announces the debut of its first Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey, scheduled to hit shelves nationwide throughout May 2024. This occasion signifies a historic milestone as the hometown-distillery unveils its first maiden distillate crafted from barley grown on the family farm next to the Atlantic Ocean.

The first cask was filled back on May 1st, 2019 and within a year it had secured the title of the World’s Best Irish New Make, at the World Whiskies Awards. Now, this exceptional spirit has matured into an outstanding whiskey and is finally being released.

Matured in ex-Bourbon, Amontillado and Oloroso sherry casks, this expression presents flavours of sweet vanilla and kiwi, complemented by notes of caramelised pear and dark chocolate.

Head Distiller Oisín Mulcahy said:

“The elements harmonise to deliver the perfect balance of sweetness and a full-bodied character, leaving subtle notes of caramel and citrus peel on the finish.”

“It’s in our nature to experiment, here at Clonakilty. That’s why we extended the traditional fermentation period of our washes, allowing the yeast more time to produce the flavours we have come to expect in our award-winning distillate. All our spirit is derived from 100% Cork grown malted and unmalted barley. We also add water, very slowly and gradually, a method called the gentle cut.”


Out here, people do things their own way. Like the Scully family. Farming this same land for nine generations. Taking the considered view that Irish whiskey could be improved, by harnessing natural elements in a unique and more sustainable way. So they did just that.

Building a distillery. Growing their own barley where the salty air, soft rain and mist infuse every grain. Boring deep into the ancient rock to draw the purest, clearest spring water.

Vanilla sweetness leads to hints of demerara sugar, citrus peel and kiwi.

Vanilla, caramelised pear and apple, gives way to a gentle wood spice, dark chocolate and orange.
