Irish rugby stars Adam and Dan Leavy launch Ogham Whiskey

Irish rugby stars Adam and Dan Leavy today launched Ogham Whiskey, which they have developed alongside their father Donal and friend Doug Leddin.
The launch marks a culmination of a 4-year journey which began when the Leavy family looked to explore the possibility of developing a distillery on their family farm in Mullingar which led them to reach out to industry veteran Doug Leddin.
Following Dan’s retirement from professional rugby the group decided to progress the idea and dip their toes into the market before investing heavily in planning and equipment.
Adam was always passionate about creating a whiskey brand that had a nod to the past, paid its respect to the ancient craft of the Irish person and what better way of doing so by incorporating the original Irish Alphabet into their story. OGHAM.
Ogham is the earliest known form of writing used in Ireland. The earliest surviving examples date back to the 4th century AD meaning that Ogham provides a window into the language, culture, and society of early Ireland.
Among the finer details of the bottle are some personal touches which reference those involved such as a 7-year age statement to reflect Dan’s number when he played for Ireland and Leinster and Adam’s time with the Ireland 7s team.
In addition, the back of the bottle is adorned with the ogham spelling of DL which are the initials of three of the four founders while the words “Pure”, “Family”, “Éire” and “Pride” also feature.

It’s not every day you get to launch a new venture and to do it alongside friends and family makes it that bit extra special. We’ve worked extremely hard to get every aspect of this project right and we can’t wait to share our extraordinary liquid with the country’s whiskey lovers.”
Commenting on the news, Dan Leavy, said
“This really is a culmination of a dream that has been fueled by our passion for Irish whiskey and strong desire to create something unique and reflective of all those involved. It’s been a long road, with plenty of ups and downs, but we couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve created.”
Ogham Irish Whiskey will begin as a series of small batch releases for the first few years, this will allow us to build a brand name and reputation. It was important for us to focus on quality and to ensure our audience knew that we put time care and effort into every element of Ogham. From the bottle to the bag and everything in-between.
Ogham Whiskey’s first expression is a 7 year old Single Malt Irish Whiskey which was laid down by Great Northern Distillery in the same year that Dan made his Debut for Ireland and finished in a Madeira cask. Through the help of PPI Group and GSB we have sourced and finished this beautiful liquid and bottled it at 47.23%.
